From coastal and mountain retreats to quaint historic towns, there is plenty to discover within a few hours of Taipei.

Jioufen Old Street 
Traditional snacks, antiques,art and more are sold at shops housed in the historic buildings lining the narrow winding roads of Jioufen, with plenty of scenic views along the way.

Shengping Theater
Located on Jishan Rd. since i ts relocat ion in 1934, this is the oldest theater in northern Taiwan. I t was once a popular entertainment si te, but closed when the local mines played out.

Gold Ecological Park
A museum, environmental education center, Japanese-era chalet, and abandoned mine bring to life Jioufen's former days as a gold rush town.

Jinshan Temple Duck Meat
Customers form long lines all year round for the duck at this 40-year-old shop near Guang-an Temple. The duck here is fragrant, tender and not too oily. The menu also includes a selection of seasonal vegetable dishes.

Heping Island
This geologically rich island at the northern tip of Keelung Harbor is a good place to explore the local geology, go boating and enjoy a seawater pool swim.

Yangmingshan National Park
Yangmingshan Nat ional Park is a volcanic mountain area in Taipei, providing city dwellers with an escape for hiking and hot spring soaks. The flower blooms are a major at tract ion here from mid - February to early April.

Xiaoyoukeng
This geothermally active volcanic area is easily distinguished by the coils of sulfurous white steam rising from fissures in the ground and the sulfur deposits coloring the rock. This is a must-see site on any trip to Yangmingshan.

Qingtiangang
Situated at the foothills of Cisingshan, this highland prairie commands a sweeping mountain view. There are plenty of trai ls and picnic areas to enjoy the fresh air and free-roaming cows.

Zhuzhihu
This rustic area has been developed with tourism farms in recent years. The area is well known for its wild veggie cuisine and calla lilies, which come into bloom from November to May.

Grass Mountain

Riverside Park
Birding areas, scenic bike paths and expansive views are among the notable attractions at this park along the Dahan River near Huajiang Bridge.

Cihhuei Temple
Built during the mid-19th century, this is the oldest temple in Banqiao dedicated to the goddess Mazu. The temple has been restored several times over the years with funds donated by adherents.

Hakka Culture in Neiwan & Beipu

Neiwan and Beipu are home to large Hakka communities, the cultural influence of which can be seen in the local architecture and cuisine. Neiwan Train Station This station welcomes visitors with rustic charm and scenic surroundings. The building is colorfully adorned with illustrations by a well-known local cartoonist. The old part of town is located just across the street. From Taipei Main Station take the train to Hsinchu and then take the Neiwan Branch Line to Neiwan.
